I colgue el telefono.

No sé qué hacer.

What is the symbolism behind trains in literature or in general?
I have read the story "The Bride Comes to Yellow Sky" by Stephen Crane and I was wondering if there was any symbolism behind the train considering that it takes up a portion of the story. If you haven't read the story, i would like to here your views on what trains could possibly symbolize in life and or books. Thank you for your time.

I've never read the story, however have studied literature. Look at the context in which the train is used. Throughout the story, what are the characters doing in their lives when the train is mentioned? When I think of trains, I think of what they sound like from a distance and the sound of a train whistle. This is a lonely sound. Or possibly it's used to symbolize the character's wanderlust since trains are associated with hobos traveling from city to city. The train goes everywhere. It could also be symbollic of perseverance...chug, chug chugging along steadily. The train was placed for a reason, as is everything in a story, so it does have some relevance.

The Little Engine That Could

Childhood memories cannot be completed without the stories of The Little Engine That Could, a book written by Mary C. Jacobs. This inspirarional book first appeared in the early 1900’s. This book is a children’s classic that has helped children to read and imagine far away places that only a child can visit using imagination. This book was first introduced as a moralistic children’s story in the United States. Initially, this book was intended to teach children positive attitudes and hard work. The stories and its familiar train sound and clever image has transcended all ages and generations. Who as a child has not sat around the carpet and listen to these stories? In most of the stories this little engine must pull out of any difficult situation through hard work and tenacity, and just as the American dream . this is a story that metaphorically adheres to American history and its struggles. Most of us who have enjoyed listening and reading these stories share the feeling of accomplishment through hard work and a positive attitude.
(there is not mention of the train--- this essay is about trains- why did agatha choose to use the train as the set of this story)

Murder in the Orient Express

Additional Footage:

Suspense, mystery and murder draw us to immerse ourselves in the pages of the Murder on the Orient Express, written by Agatha Christie, a fictional mystery novel involving the famous Belgan detective Hercule Poirot. This story begins when Poirot returns from solving an important case in Syria. While on board of the Orient Express a crime occurs and Poirot suddenly becomes involved trying to solve the case. Initially, the train was unusually crowded for this time of the year and Poirot was only able to get a berth because his friend M. Bouc, a director in the “Compagnie Internationale des Wagons-Lits”. When a Mr. Harris does not show up at the train station, Hercule Poirot takes his place and on the following night he gets a whole compartment only for himself alone. In the middle of the night, a loud sound is heard. Pirot wakes up various times during the night . The following day, he wakes up to find out that there has been a murder, Mr. Ratchett's was stabbed. 12 times!... Now it is time to take out the magnifying glass and find all clues to discover who committed the murder. Interesting stories, detective work and exotic setting are sure a perfect combination to keep you engrossed reading this intriguing story.
Dreams about trains are something I have not experienced myself in this lifetime. However, when someone has a dream about trains this could mean that one goes through a definite train of thought. A meditating phase in which you are questioning yourself and you are thinking whether or not you are following a right path in life. Are you concerned about where you are heading? Are you where you want to be? This could be caused because you sense that you may not be in right place you would like to be now. Sometimes we are pushed into submission or we just give in to peer pressure and we ended up doing things that otherwise we wouldn’t. When we are having these kinds of dreams we are definitely questioning subconsciously about our actions. We may thing that the choices we made are not the rights ones. It is interesting to find out the meaning about the presence of trains in our dreams. Should you feel like you are losing sight and or feeling side-tracked ? These dreams are just like having a gut feeling. Imagine that you are feeling uncomfortable right before you board the train. You do not get on board. The train leaves and shortly after, there is a wreckage. You find yourself waking up sweating profusely. You are in your bed. You are safe. It was just a dream.
Reading a good book is a rewarding experience. In my lifetime, I have been fortunate to read to my children various stories, among them The Little Engine that Could, my son specially enjoyed listening to these stories. The bonding among human beings that takes place while reading a book is magical. It is just like traveling to faraway places throughout time and space. We are able to experience being in the same setting these stories take place . Reading helps to make you a better reader and definitely can take you places without going further than the comfort of your cozy home.
